I actually had the same problem for the longest time…believe me, I’ve bought so many different foundations and then gotten home to find that they just don’t match as well as they did at the store. Honestly, the best solution was to just go to a cosmetics counter and have a pro do it for me. A couple of weeks ago, I went to the MAC counter at Macy’s and within 5 minutes, I had the perfect shade of foundation. I think part of this was simply because they have so many shades…all of the brands I tried before had limited selections of colors, so it was really hard to find anything that kind of matched my skin tone–either it was too dark, too light, or too orange-y. So, I’m not sure that really helps or if it’s what you’re looking for, but it’s what worked for me… :)

I agree about going to the cosmetics counter. Most of the girls who do the makeup are makeup artists and know what to look for in your skin tone.
Another trick the makeup artist at Prescriptives taught me was to look at my neck and the inside of my wrist–matching the color to those two places will match your face. This is how I found out my tones are red/blue and not yellow/green!

I’m on the perfect foundation hunt, and one thing I can tell you that has helped has been going to the Nordstrom counters. The MAs are incredibly helpful. I tested a Lancome foundation, and the MA literally walked me outside, so that we could see the finish and the color match in real daylight. She told me that the harsh lightbulbs in the stores distort what the makeup actually looks like - hence it looking great in the store, looking orange-y at home.

I think going to the counter it better since they can test the foundations and customize them to match your skin tone perfectly. If you cant afford to splurge since they can get a little expensive there are some great foundations at your local pharmacy from loreal and revlon. In fact Rite aid lets customers return makeup even if it’s open.

1. Know your undertones. Don’t be afraid to ask! 2. Ask for samples, again don’t be afraid to ask.
Some foundations tend to oxidize oncce they’ve been on for an hour or 2 and that can turn them orangey on some people, so ask questions about that.

go to a counter & sample. i would suggest getting your foundation from a counter after this, it is such an important product for your overall look, not worth getting something that is “iffy”

Always try it out in natural light. Unfortunately you can’t do that in a drug store. The make up counter may be more expensive but it’s totally worth it.

for drugstore, i would suggest going to one that would let you return it if you don’t like it. rite aid has that awesome policy.
with department stores, like shannon says, go with the makeup artists. they do this for a living so they would be the best help
